3ds Max slow loading

Does anyone know why alembic files load considerably slower when there are other assets in the 3ds Max scene before loading as versus with an empty scene?

They stream in live from the disk as you advance frames. Thus if they are not quickly accessible they will be slow to access. So if they are local on your SSD they will be crazy fast, if they are on a slow fileserver across a congested network they will be slow. They are slower than point caches as well, even in the best case scenario. We were not able to figure out how point caches in 3DS Max were as fast as they were using standard SDK functions.
