Featured Post Text Display Fix

Issue Description

The featured post text was not showing properly in the blog cards. The text content was either empty or not displaying correctly due to improper HTML content processing.

Root Cause

The issue was in the truncateText function used across multiple components. The function was using DOMPurify to sanitize HTML content from the Quill editor, but it wasn't properly handling cases where:

  1. The HTML content was complex and contained nested elements
  2. The sanitized text became empty after removing all HTML tags
  3. HTML entities weren't being properly decoded
  4. No fallback mechanism existed for empty content

Solution Implemented

1. Enhanced truncateText Function

Updated the function in three components:

  • src/pages/home/Home.jsx
  • src/pages/allBlogs/AllBlogs.jsx
  • src/components/blogPostCard/BlogPostCard.jsx

Key Improvements:

  • Added proper HTML entity decoding (&, <, >, etc.)
  • Implemented fallback text extraction using DOM parsing
  • Added error handling with try-catch blocks
  • Provided default text when content is empty
  • Enhanced text cleaning with better whitespace handling

2. New Function Logic

const truncateText = (text, limit) => {
  if (!text) return '';

  try {
    // First, sanitize the HTML content
    const sanitizedText = DOMPurify.sanitize(text, {
      ALLOWED_TAGS: [],
      ALLOWED_ATTR: []
    });

    // Clean up the text with proper entity decoding
    let cleanedText = sanitizedText
      .replace(/ /g, ' ')
      .replace(/&/g, '&')
      .replace(/&lt;/g, '<')
      .replace(/&gt;/g, '>')
      .replace(/&quot;/g, '"')
      .replace(/&#39;/g, "'")
      .replace(/\s+/g, ' ')
      .trim();

    // Fallback: If sanitized text is empty, parse HTML manually
    if (!cleanedText) {
      const tempDiv = document.createElement('div');
      tempDiv.innerHTML = text;
      cleanedText = tempDiv.textContent || tempDiv.innerText || '';
      cleanedText = cleanedText.replace(/\s+/g, ' ').trim();
    }

    // Final fallback: Return default message
    if (!cleanedText) {
      return 'Click to read more...';
    }

    // Truncate if needed
    return cleanedText.length <= limit ? cleanedText : cleanedText.substring(0, limit) + '...';
  } catch (error) {
    console.warn('Error processing text:', error);
    return 'Click to read more...';
  }
};

Data Structure Understanding

The blog data is stored in Firebase with this structure:

{
  blogs: {
    title: "Blog Title",
    content: "<p>HTML content from Quill editor</p>",
    category: "Technology",
    tags: ["tag1", "tag2"]
  },
  thumbnail: "image_url",
  date: "Jun 30, 2024",
  time: Timestamp
}

The content is accessed as blog.blogs.content and contains HTML from the Quill editor.

Testing Results

  • ✅ Featured post text now displays correctly
  • ✅ HTML content is properly sanitized and converted to plain text
  • ✅ Fallback mechanisms work when content is empty
  • ✅ Error handling prevents crashes
  • ✅ Consistent behavior across all components

Components Affected

  1. Home Page (src/pages/home/Home.jsx)

    • Featured posts section
    • Latest posts section
    • Search results
  2. All Blogs Page (src/pages/allBlogs/AllBlogs.jsx)

    • Blog listing
    • Search functionality
    • Category filtering
  3. Blog Post Card Component (src/components/blogPostCard/BlogPostCard.jsx)

    • Individual blog cards
    • Blog previews

Benefits

  • Better User Experience: Users can now see meaningful preview text
  • Improved SEO: Better meta descriptions and social sharing
  • Consistent Display: All blog cards show text consistently
