Geologic Unit Order

Request to order geologic units by time. The current way geologic units are ordered is alphabetical- but we generally think about stratigraphy in a temporal order.

The ideal order logic would be organized by absolute age, if that is not entered then organized by geologic time scale divisions. If users didn't enter any temporal info then alphabetical would be fine.

Temporal Sorting Summary

Direct Ma fields (checked first)

1. absolute_age_of_geologic_unit — used as-is
2. max_absolute_age_of_geol_unit + min_absolute_age_of_geol_unit — if both present, use midpoint; if only one, use that value

Named time period fields (checked in group order)
For each group below, all values selected across all fields in that group are collected. Their [max, min] Ma ranges are combined into a single span (overall max and overall min), then the age_modifier is applied to that span:

• early → 1/4 of the way from the old end toward the young end
• late → 3/4 of the way from the old end toward the young end
• middle or no modifier (or multiple modifiers) → midpoint

The groups in priority order:
3. Age — age_pleistocene, age_pliocene, age_miocene, age_oligocene, age_eocene, age_paleocene, age_cretaceous, age_jurassic, age_triassic, age_permian, age_carboniferous, age_pennsylvania, age_mississippian, age_devonian, age_sliurian, age_ordovician, age_cambrian
4. Epoch — epoch_quaternary, epoch_neogene, epoch_paleogene, epoch_tertiary
5. Period — period_cenozoic, period_mesozoic, period_paleozoic, period_neoproterozoic, period_mesoproterozoic, period_paleoproterozoic
6. Era — era_phanerozoic, era_proterozoic, era_archean
7. Eon — eon

Fallback
If none of the above fields have a value, the tag goes at the end sorted alphabetically by name (or reverse-alphabetically when sort is reversed).

Sort direction
Default is youngest→oldest (smallest Ma first). The reverse button flips to oldest→youngest, with no-date tags still at the end.
