Scriptum button has no effect on macos

Hello, i just discovered your mod and it look awesome.
I'm trying to use it on macos with rome2.
I use the workshop to subscribe, the mod is downloaded and activated in mod manager.
I see the button in the ui, in both welcome screen and in game screen.
But when i clic on it, nothing happens.
Do you have an idea about that?

Hey there! I don't have Mac so that can be an issue ^^
Do you have log file (consul.log) in your game directory?
If you do, please paste it here.

sadly no , i spent the morning chatting with claude trying to understand what can happen.
there is no .log or .config files
as a developer myself i'll be happy to try anithing to help :)

That's strange. My bet is: Mac version handle Lua in such way that writing files is not possible.
Take a look at this code, it's the first thing that gets executed when consul loads, as you can see its raw Lua code so there should be something written to that file (Starting consul\n).

Building is done via Makefile and its tested only on Windows.
For now I suggest just opening the pack file via RPFM and modify the path there.

I managed to build a rome2 pack file with make game=rome2
I can confirm that with the workshop version, the button open the console on windows.
What i'm trying to do is
Build a pack file without changes
Use it in the game
On windows only for know.
I want to try the newly locally built .pack file,
What's the procedure?
Unsubscribe from the workshop?
Replace the .pack in the workshop folder?

I try to unsubscribe from workshop, then add the pack file in the rome2/data folder but the mod does not appear anymore in the mod manager and the button is not showing anymore

I don't use mod manager it's buggy. There's a better way to install mods.
Take a look at run-alone and run-steam targets inside Makefile.

For example:
make game=Rome2 run-alone
or
make game=Rome2 run-steam

That should build the packfile copy it, install (via user.script.txt) and run the game (killing any existing game process).
Just make sure that in the Rome 2 game settings -> mods -> run user script is checked.

For version tracking there's git, but I don't know if i understand your question.
When you run make commands your are building .pack file from your local files.

I'm wondering, when you install a local pack file and want to install a new version, if you need to increase the version of the local pack file to be able to use it or if just replace with make run-steam is enough

Still not sure I understand but:
When you run make run-steam then make will check if local files changed, if they do the pack file will be rebuilt and then copied into your game data folder. It should be visible in your console.

ok, i have news :
first, i now have a log file consul.log in ~folder
what i had to change for that is construc log path depending of the platform
in all_scripted_rome2.lua just before __write('Starting consul')

I do have the button but still nothing happen when i clic on it.

Thats great ! Here is what I think that should be done, maybe you have better idea:

1. The __write method is only used in all_scripted.lua for initial logging (so it's not dependant on consul).
2. There is more places where io.open is used by the consul itself - all of them have to be patched, to do it correctly we should define a function on consul module that will be called instead of the original io.open.

Example:

  io_open = function(...)
    -- here your patched os - aware method
    -- but it has to handle all file names not only consul.log
    -- you have to extract the file path argument and append extra path into it if your on Mac
    -- so it always stays consistent

4. If it does then open the consul.config file and set log_level to -1 (from the log levels table):
