set() silently fails and doesn't set new/non existent attributed to listed elements

two issues:

1. set() silently fails without much indication when set operation fails
2. when dealing with a data structure which has listed dictionary elements, trying to add new dictionary attributes to an existing dictionary fails to work . This was demonstrated by using a dpath.get() on the path with reference to the index of the listed element.
