Would it be possible to add cascading submenus to the dropdown component, as in the Google Material 'you' Expressive specs?

Yes that sounds good! I think we should transition to anchor-positioning and popover elements soon.
I saw that safari and firefox are working on implementing this feature too https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/position-anchor 👍
