Right now users have to know that certain layers expose a list of available Data Tables for visualization, and that to access them they need to find the data table icon in the legend. This is clearly insufficient. I can see to candidates for improving this UX.
- When on layer features on the map (e.g. monitoring sites), the map popup could show a footer that declares data tables are available for that layer, with a dropdown appearing if the click on a button to activate a table.
- We could put the same data table icon in the layer list, next to the layer name, which has approximately the same appearance and behavior as the button in the legend.
- A banner, toast, or other sort of indicator could appear on the map when one or more layers are visible which provide data tables.
I'm not too excited about the design of 2 or 3 when I picture it in my head, but clearly we need multiple avenues for people to discover this relatively hidden functionality.
