I read your windows bat files, let me suggest Everything (installable via Choco), and the commandline tool 'es' , updated indexes in real time, ultra fast search, etc...

Thanks for the tips. I'm aware of Everything due to using Ninite back in the Windows XP days. However, there are a few reasons I'm not interested in it: When it comes to productivity software, I have a strong preference for open source, but Everything is proprietary. That's not for philosophical reasons, but practical ones: I routinely hack on and customize many of the tools I rely upon. In fact, I believe this skill is an essential mark of a good software engineer. If there's something about Everything I do not like, I cannot change it. Windows itself is not a platform I prefer nor really enjoy using. It's something I'm stuck with for reasons outside of my control. Anything Windows-specific in this repository is about easing my pain on Windows and making it a little more like Linux. I don't want to invest time into Windows-specific interfaces when I can avoid it. My locate.bat and updatedb.bat, which follow the interface of the same commands on unix-like systems, really do work well enough for all of my needs. Building the index (updatedb.bat) is very slow compared to mlocate or Everything since it does it from scratch every time, but searching the index is practically the same speed on all three (i.e. instantaneous). My two scripts also have a unique advantage: They rely on basic Windows facilities and no additional software is required. I can also rewrite them completely from memory when I'm in a pinch.
