The Makefile.in creates a static archive from PIC objects, which is probably not deliberate.
CFLAGS CPPFLAGS LDFLAGS LIBS may be set either via the environment, as ./configure arguments, or on the Make command line. Remove the GCCFLAGS variable for clarity.
