Open list programmatically

I need to be able to open the list programmatically from the containing component.
i.e. to trigger a tap event on the textield from the code.
So that on a form when the user press "next" on the previous field the list will open automatically.

I found a workaround by exposing the tapHandler method and using it like this:

   focus(): void {
        // The 'tapHandler' method is private, had to use following hack to trick the TS compiler
        const jsPicker = this.listpicker.nativeElement as any;
        jsPicker.tapHandler(null);
