Dr Jon Cardoso-Silva

Associate Professor (Education), Department of Methodology, LSE.

I teach data science at LSE and study how generative AI influences the way students self-study. With colleagues on GENIAL, we produced a diagnostic framework from students' ChatGPT conversations and Git histories. I am one of LSE's fellows on the AI in Education Fellowship, building a proactive GenAI tutor that follows the syllabus week by week and offers different learning paths.

◎ AI and Education Fellowship (2025–2027). I am one of LSE's fellows on the AI and Education Fellowship, building a proactive GenAI tutor for MY105W that adapts to where students are in the weekly learning progression. I have already built a temporally aware bot and tested it with my students in 2025–26 (Imperial GenAI Shorts talk); I am currently going through the initial data cleaning and analysis. During my teaching buyout this Autumn Term (September to December 2026), I am developing the proactive version. I am testing it first with our MY202A students this term, and I will then deploy a fuller version in MY105W in the Winter Term (January to March 2027).

◎ GENIAL (project site). Led jointly with Marcos Barreto, Dorottya Sallai, and Casey Kearney; funded by the LSE Eden Centre and the LSE Data Science Institute. Our first research cycle produced the GENIAL Framework from ChatGPT logs and Git histories. I am now using it in the new fellowship research cycle (2025–2027).

◎ Teaching. I am Associate Professor (Education) at the Department of Methodology as of August 2026. In 2026/27 I am shadowing Dr Stuart Bramwell on MY202A and building an AI tutor for self-study. In the Winter Term I am teaching MY105W (Data for Data Science) and MY481 Generative AI for Social Science Research. From 2022 to 2026 I convened DS105, DS205, and ME204 at the LSE Data Science Institute (those codes are now MY under Methodology). I also collaborated on the AI Leadership Accelerator.
