Website doesn't build with latest version of hugo

Using the latest hugo (0.139) the website won't build locally.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding how to brew install old versions of hugo, so this is blocking local rendering of the website on macs.

I think the ultimate solution shouldn't be downpinning anyway. We may want to use the goldmark package as a replacement for mmark, or pre-render the mmark-dependent pages so the content that they needed to compile at build-time is instead pre-built and stored statically.

Homebrew has some support for installing older versions of packages, but this one isn't accessible with brew install hugo@0.108.0. I don't know why. They let you install from a file, however, and with some patience it's all in their git tree

@mattwthompson that worked, thank you! I tried something similar with version 0.109.0 and it didn't work.

There are a few things going on here:

• Hugo maintainers claim to have removed MMark support in 0.92, but versions around 0.124 still build with it. Something else needs to be used to render LaTeX, even though it's only used on 2 or 3 pages.
• Some old pages have markup: mark in the front matter, which produces a confusing error. I don't know which versions this fails to build for. Replacing them with markup: markdown seems to work.

Thanks for the PR, @mattwthompson. I'm thinking that a long term solution that could get the website up to the latest version of Hugo would be replacing the latex bits with pre-rendered images. Does this seem like a good way forward/are there other avenues we should consider?

Maybe; I'd like to try again to get LaTeX rendering up (I follow the docs and something isn't working with a dead-simple Hello World style example) since it's useful for existing pages and future additions. But if I can't turn that around in short time it's a reasonable compromise.

With #500 it's updated by a couple of years but not actually the most recent version, so I'm leaving this open despite some progress being made.
