As discussed in #5494, this PR adds support for extended content types.
Main refacto was to centralize content types handling to have a better view on how they are used and handled across the package.
The test suite might be a bit lacking but I did not find a really appropriate spot for this since it has quite a large spectrum (despite the change itself being quite small).
Please tell me where you would see the tests being the most appropriate.
