mainalready contains unreleased pre-1.0 API/ABI changes intended for the next minor release. KeepingVERSIONat 0.5.0 also kept the generated SONAME/package compatibility on the 0.5 line, which could misidentify incompatible builds as released-0.5 compatible.VERSIONremains the single manually maintained version source.
